Have you already heard of the newest vegan textile discovered?
Who and where? López Velarde, Marte Cázarez and cactus are heroes of this invention. They first showed up at the International Leather Fair Lineappelle 2019, which took place in October in Milan, Italy and Australian Vogue had already gone mad about it.
López Velarde was working in the furniture and automotive industry, while Marte Cázarez in fashion industry. They are both aware of bad influence which natural leather production has on the environment so decided to leave their jobs and start working on Desserato which took them two years of research. And here we are in 2019 with very new vegan cactus leather.
Because there is a lot of them in Mexico? Well, yes. And secondly...who has at least one cactus at home, which was forgotten for months and is still alive? Exactly! Cactus need almost no water to live.
Cactus leather vs natural leather
You are probably thinking about good and bad sides cactus leather may have. It is hard to talk about bad ones, because none are known at the moment. Lets focus on good ones then. Firstly, they say Desserto will last for at least 10 year of using it as the quality of material is really high. Well, I think we can't be sure of that as there is too many factors we can’t predict. We will talk about it in 10 years :)
The most important though – and that is for sure – cactus leather is cruelty free, unnecessary suffering free and it does not cause death of billions of animals. Secondly, as I mentioned before there is very little amount of water needed to plant cactus and no toxic chemicals are being used in a process – all opposite to natural leather production. Just to be clear – natural leather is NOT biodegradable due to chemicals used in it’s tanning, but chemicals free cactus leather is!
What is more, it look very exclusive, it is breathable, quite stretchy and very soft (I wish I could touch it).
When will we make cactus leather shoes?
That would be something! At this moment Desserto is not commercially available. Adriano Di Marti runs some test to get to know it better. Seems like it will be possible to order every amount of material, so it will be accessible even for small companies like us. It takes time though.
Plant -based textiles are a big hope for our tired and devastated Planet Earth. There is more and more alternatives to natural leather and they become more and more popular because of consumers’ (that is You) interest. So just a little reminder in the end – your everyday choices matter!
