Some of you have probably heard big news already. Stockholm fashion week is offically canceled this year. Why is it such a big deal? Do you wonder why does it mean so much?
What is the problem?
The whole fashion industry is a problem. The amout of clothes being produced every day is enourmosly big. These clothes are mosty produced in asian countries, because then it is cheaper for us to buy it. So we buy much more than we need. Just becaue it is cheap. We buy something, we wear it once and then it goes to the trash. And this trash is going back to Asia, to the landfill, or to Africa, also ending up in the landfill. We cannot recycle that much textiles, we just can’t.
Ok, but what does it have in common with fashion week?
Fashion week works like a great big advert. Trends you see on a catwalk will appear in every high street shop and first pages of magazines within few weeks after. Then whole world starts to follow this trend and go for shopping to get what is fashionable at the moment. But… Fashion weeks are also a great opportunity for designers to talk aboout important social and environmental issues. For example, everyone knew when Chanel stopped using fur in her projects. Seems like climate change topic and fashion's industry impact on it is also being showed off much often recently. What I am trying to say is that fashion designers have a huge impact on us. And if they do, maybe thats a good point to start with. Isn’t cancelation of this event the loudest message? Yes, it is. And that what it is all about.
What is real profit of it?
Stepping away from the conventional fashion week model has been a difficult, but much considered, decision. We need to put the past to rest and to stimulate the development of a platform that is relevant for today’s fashion industry,” said Jennie Rosén, ceo of the Swedish Fashion Council. Seems like Denmark might do the same thing by cancelling Kopenhagen fashion week. Sweden is setting ecological trends so they just used their power to bring attention to fashion industry. By the end of this year we will find out what alternative event is going to take place in Sweden instead of Fashion Week. I bet it is gonna be very creative and will surprise us all.
