We have been offering vegan men's shoes in our collection for several years. Derby and Oxford shoes are classic models of men's dress shoes. Both models remain very popular. New colors and materials from which they are made gradually appeared in the offer. Today we will compare both classics. Here's how they differ.
Lacing system in derby and oxford models
The main difference between them is the way the lacing system is constructed.
Derby Shoes: These have an open upper construction, which means that pieces of fabric on the front of the shoe (called "flaps" or "wings") are sewn to the side panel, which is both the upper and tongue portion of the shoe. This design allows for greater flexibility, which is especially useful for people with wide feet.
The open lacing system allows for greater adjustment, making the Derby shoes more versatile and adaptable to various foot shapes.
Oxford shoes: These have a closed upper construction in which scraps of fabric on the front of the shoe are sewn directly to the upper panel. This means that the shoe tongue is separately sewn to the upper. This design gives the Oxford shoe a more formal look and is less flexible (less adjustable) than the Derby, especially for slightly wider feet.
More or less formal? For what occasions derbies and oxfords?
Derby shoes are considered slightly less formal than oxfords due to the open lacing system and the extra space they provide. They are often seen as appropriate for business attire but can be worn in a variety of less formal situations.
Oxfords are generally considered more formal due to their closed lacing system and cleaner lines. They are often preferred for formal business attire and for occasions such as weddings and elegant evenings.
The choice between derby shoes and oxfords depends on personal style, the formality of the occasion, individual foot shape and comfort preferences.
