Fashion Revolution Week is a global movement that aims to raise awareness of the social and environmental impact of the fashion industry and promote a more sustainable and ethical approach to fashion.
The event, or rather series, is held annually around the world, usually in April, and includes a variety of activities such as lectures, workshops and campaigns.
The genesis of the Fashion Revolution movement
The Fashion Revolution movement is a response to the tragedy that took place at the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh. In April 2013, more than 1,100 people died and thousands were injured as a result of the collapse of the building's structure. The tragedy exposed the harsh working conditions and exploitation that are often hidden behind the fast fashion industry, and launched a global movement for change.
In the aftermath of the disaster, a group of activists and industry insiders came together to form Fashion Revolution, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry. The first edition of Fashion Revolution Week took place on April 24, 2014, exactly one year after the collapse of Rana Plaza, and has since become a week-long event celebrated in various countries around the world.
Fashion Revolution Week aims to raise awareness of the human and environmental costs of the fashion industry and encourage consumers to demand change. It also aims to promote sustainable and ethical alternatives to fast fashion, such as buying second-hand, supporting local designers, and selecting brands that prioritize transparency and fair labor practices.
Fashion Revolution in Poland
“Circular fashion closes the circuit, but opens thinking. Its advantages are indisputable: for the environment, the consumer, the economy, although there are also challenges and doubts. It's worth talking about." - Fashion Revolution Poland
In Poland, Fashion Revolution Week events are organized by the local branch of Fashion Revolution Poland and other local groups and organizations. Usually, this special week includes events such as fashion shows, panel discussions, concerts, film screenings and workshops. The aim of the series is to encourage consumers to think more critically about clothing purchases and to promote transparency and responsibility in the fashion industry.
Here you can check what Polish organizations in different cities have prepared this year to support the initiative and promote awareness of sustainable fashion.
Who made my clothes?
During Fashion Revolution Week, people are encouraged to ask questions #whomademyclothes and demand more transparency from fashion brands about their supply chains and working conditions. By shedding light on the people and processes behind our clothes, Fashion Revolution aims to create a more sustainable and equitable fashion industry.
